Louis Wain

Louis Wain had an uncanny skill in expressing a myriad of human emotions through the eyes of anthropomorphized cats.

The above image is peculiar to his style in that the eyes are concealed by a set of glasses, but shit, it is nice.

He suffered from late onset schizophrenia, and the subtle-to-dramatic changes in his artwork during his various stages of illness are well represented here:
nutjob

They get amazingly vibrant, jagged, and electric. Then he begins to abstract them into a palette of mealy, earthy tones, like dried wheat, bark, and peas.

This guy died in 1939, yet his late work seems to represent, in consecutive stages, the psychedlic decor of the 60's, followed by the dried earthy hell of the late 70's - early 80's. Are we suffering a collective mental illness?

What the fuck am I talking about.

I am happy because everyone loves me.

i agree.. whatever brain frizz he had was there from the get-go. some can keep their cool & others just lose-tether.

i came across his stuff from a street peddler selling repros of victorian trade cards. i picked up one, of two gatos on ice skates. another was of a froggy general keeping froggy soldiers in formation. not wain, but i'd love to find out who.
