After watching a Good Eats episode where Alton Brown – a fucking [food] god among men – debunks the bottled water myth (and confirming what most of us already know), the word seem to be catching on. An article published on the Times of London by food crit Giles Coren, a snip:

"Mineral water is a preposterous vanity. It is flown and shipped around the world, from France and Norway at best, from Japan and Fiji at worst. It is bottled in glass that is mostly thrown away and is stupidly heavy to freight, or in plastic which never, ever, decomposes and just goes to landfill or ends up in one of the “plastic patches” the size of Texas currently gyring in our oceans.

Food snobs and restaurant critics make a big song and dance about mineral waters they like and don’t like. New York’s Ritz-Carlton even caters to the whim of abstemious punters with a dedicated water list and sommelier.

The vanity of it! While half the world dies of thirst or puts up with water you wouldn’t piss in, or already have, we have invested years and years, and vast amounts of money, into an ingenious system which cleanses water of all the nasties that most other humans and animals have always had to put up with, and delivers it, dirt-cheap, to our homes and workplaces in pipes, which we can access at a tap.

And yet last year we bought three billion litres of bottled water. 3,000,000,000 litres! I have no idea how much that is. But it seems a lot. Especially when we were fooled into buying it because of labels that said “pure as an alpine stream”, “bottled at the foot of a Mexican volcano” or “cleansed for three million years beneath a Siberian glacier”. What morons we are.

I only remember a few details from the other night.

There’s my Mexican friend, a guy I grew up with.

He is a bit older than I am, maybe by four or five years with a graceful, aged face – possibly from a lifetime of working under the sun.

We haven’t seen each other in a while.

Standing under the shade of a tree, we were having light conversation, jumping from one matter to another, mostly catching up ….

…. “Oh so how’s the wife?’

‘She’s good. We did this thing recently…’

He then tells me about performing the Quatro Salgado with his wife, a ritual performed to summon The Devil, for personal reasons he made unclear. (Maybe I might have completely missed his explanation – with me thinking the whole time, “How could anybody in their right mind deal with the Devil?”)

From what I understood, it’s the type of thing a person does at a time of desperation – for need or want. You make a pact with the devil using a fraction of your soul, to attain, well,the usual slew of shit people ask for – fame, money, power, love, happiness, comfort, whatever. It’s not to be taken lightly, and it’s no I’m-getting-a-ssecond-mortgage-to-put-up-a-deck type shit, this is something else entirely, and is seriously seriously serious.

The conversation went on as casually as it did, subjects changed, but all the while I was like, “Dude, What were you thinking?!”

6:30 am.

I wake up in a cold sweat, creeped the fuck out.

I turn the lights on.

Flatulence on plane sparks emergency landing

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) -- It is considered polite to light a match after passing gas. Not while on a plane.

An American Airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing Monday morning after a passenger lit a match to disguise the scent of flatulence, authorities said.

The Dallas-bound flight was diverted to Nashville after several passengers reported smelling burning sulfur from the matches, said Lynne Lowrance, spokeswoman for the Nashville International Airport Authority. All 99 passengers and five crew members were taken off and screened while the plane was searched and luggage was screened.

The FBI questioned a passenger who admitted she struck the matches in an attempt to conceal a "body odor," Lowrance said. She had an unspecified medical condition, authorities said.

"It's humorous in a way but you feel sorry for the individual, as well," she said. "It's unusual that someone would go to those measures to cover it up."

The flight took off again, but the woman was not allowed back on the plane. The woman, who was not identified, was not charged in the incident.

A guy goes over to his friend's house, rings the bell, and the wife answers.
"Hi, is Tony home?"
"No, he went to the store."
"Well, you mind if I wait?"
"No, come in."
They sit down and the friend says "You know Nora, you have the greatest breasts I have ever seen. I'd give you a hundred bucks if I could just see one."
Nora thinks about this for a second and figures what the hell - a hundred bucks. She opens her robe and shows one. He promptly thanks her and throws a hundred bucks on the table.
They sit there a while longer and Chris says "They are so beautiful I've got to see the both of them. I'll give you another hundred bucks if I could just see the both of them together."
Nora thinks about this and thinks what the hell, opens her robe, and gives Chris a nice long look. Chris thanks her, throws another hundred bucks on the table, and then says he can't wait any longer and leaves.
A while later Tony arrives home and his wife says "You know, your weird friend Chris came over."
Tony thinks about this for a second and says "Well did he drop off the 200 bucks he owes me?"

Governors Island is a 10-minute ferry ride from lower Manhattan. FREE ferry departs from the Battery Maritime Building, Slip 7, located at 10 South Street and adjacent to the Staten Island ferry terminal at the corner of South and Whitehall Streets.

Tuesday-Thursday Morning Tour: Departs Manhattan via ferry at 10 AM - All visitors must return to Manhattan at Noon.

Tuesday-Thursday Afternoon Tour: Departs Manhattan via ferry at 1 PM - All visitors must return to Manhattan at 3 PM."

this is that curious-looking fortress you could see from accross the water if you're driving down the FDR.
